It’s recommended that flat shape discs are applied to blending and finishing flat surfaces with 60 grit abrasives or finer. The conical type features 15° to 25° angled flaps which increases surface contact with the work piece so is suitable for aggressively grinding contours and edges
What are the advantages of flap discs over traditional flat discs?
With separate flaps, flap discs attack the workpiece surface at a different angle, and this varies a little with tool angle, which avoids producing repeated identical scratches as flat sheets do. At the same time, abrasive wear can be distributed more evenly across the flaps.
